A Day in Life as a Student on a Track and Field Scholarship
6:00 AMÂ
Your day kicks off early before school with the day’s first track and field practice. This session might include sprint drills, hurdle work, or distance runs, depending on your specialty. Â
10:00 AM Â
After practice, you head to your classes at campus. Time management is crucial as a track and field student-athlete, as you need to balance your schoolwork with athletic commitments. You attend lectures, participate in discussions, and work on assignments. Â
2:00 PM Â
In the afternoon, you might have a team meeting with the rest of your track and field team to discuss upcoming meets, review performance from recent competitions, or strategize for future events. Alternatively, you could have a second training session focusing on specific skills or conditioning.Â
5:00 PM Â
Depending on the day, you may have a track meet or competition. These events may occur on the weekdays but also on the weekends. They often involve travel and can last several hours. On non-competition weekdays, this time can be dedicated to recovery, including stretching, massage, or low-impact exercises to keep your body in peak condition.Â
8:00 PMÂ
Evenings are reserved for academic work. After a busy day at school and sessions at the track and field facilities, you catch up on homework, study for upcoming exams, or work on group projects. Â
College track and field season is from December to mid-March. College cross country season is from August to November. Competitions are a major part of college sports and can take place on weekdays or weekends. Often, you will need to travel to these meets and tournaments, which could be in another city or even a different state. You will travel with your team, and overnight stays may be required. Therefore, being a track and field student-athlete demands strong time management and planning skills to keep up with school and our responsibilities as an athlete —abilities that are invaluable for any future career!Â
