What is College Field Hockey?
College field hockey is the sport of field hockey played at the collegiate level, where student-athletes compete as part of a college or university team. College field hockey is one of the most popular college sports, particularly in the northeastern states of the US, although colleges and universities across the country have their own field hockey teams.Â
What makes college field hockey unique is its dual focus on athletics and academics. It allows you as a college field hockey player to compete at a high level for your school’s team, sharpening your skills and growing as player. At the same time, you will study towards a degree! With available field hockey scholarships, you get financial aid to help cover the expenses of studying and playing field hockey in the US.Â
What Does a Field Hockey Scholarship Cover?
A field hockey scholarship can significantly ease the financial burden of attending college by helping to cover the cost of attendance (COA). This means that your scholarship can contribute to tuition, fees, room and board, and other expenses. With this financial support, you can focus on in your field hockey career and studies, making the most of your college experience.Â
Men’s & Women’s Field Hockey Scholarships
In the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), Division I teams offer up to 12 full scholarships, while Division II teams provide up to 6.3 scholarships (full or partial). Division III programs don’t offer athletic scholarships but may provide other financial aid to help cover college costs. In the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), field hockey programs can award up to 12 scholarships per team, either full or partial.Â

A Day in Life as a Student on a Field Hockey Scholarship  
The chance to blend field hockey with higher education is a unique feature of the American college system. This offers players an experience you won’t find just anywhere in the world. For athletes outside America, it might be hard to picture what life as a student-athlete is like. Â
Have a look what a normal day as a college field hockey player:Â
7:00 AM Â
Start your day with a field practice or a gym workout. Early morning sessions are ideal as they don’t conflict with other team members’ schedules and help you get ahead in your training.Â
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Â
Head to campus ready for your first class by 9 AM. You will attend your classes throughout the day as any student. Lunch is often enjoyed at the campus cafeteria with teammates, providing a chance to refuel and catch up on academic work. Your afternoon includes more classes and possibly meetings or study sessions.Â
5:00 PM Â
Return to the field for another practice session or join a team meeting with your college tea,. This time is important for refining tactics, building team spirit, or train additional drills.Â
7:00 PM – 10:00 PM Â
Enjoy dinner, often with teammates or friends, and take some time to relax and recharge. Afterward, finish up any remaining schoolwork or take some time to unwind. Finding and maintaing a balance between academic responsibilities and athletic commitments is key to thrive as a student-athlete!Â
Competitions and Game DaysÂ
On game days, your routine shifts to matches and travel. The day usually starts with a pre-game meal, followed by travel to the game site. It can be in another city but sometimes even in a different states which might require fligths and overnight stays. Does it sound excitig? One of the benefits of being a student-athlete is that you get the chance to see the country! Â

Field hockey scholarships are available at numerous colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. In the NCAA, there are over 300 programs in Division I and Division II.
