What is
College Sports?

College sports, or college athletics, are sports practiced by students while being enrolled at a university or college in North America. This means that as a student who also has a sport background, you can continue practicing and compete in your sport while studying towards a degree as a “student-athlete”.

International students can also play college sports and become student-athletes in the U.S. This gives them a chance to continue their sport while studying abroad.

How many college sports are there?

The largest college sports organizations in the U.S., the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA, recognize 24 major college sports. Sports outside of these major organizations, such as rugby, gymnastics, equestrian, and triathlon, are managed by separate associations.

Universities are grouped into divisions, which determine the size of the athletic program and the level of competition. Larger schools usually compete in higher divisions with bigger crowds and more resources, while smaller schools may offer a more personal environment with strong opportunities for development.

College sports are organized into three main seasons: fall, winter, and spring. Each sport has an official competition period within one of these seasons, which is when most games and tournaments take place. However, athletes keep training throughout the year, including times when they are not officially competing. Some teams may play friendly matches or have special events in the off-season to stay sharp and improve skills.
