What is College Esport?

College esports is where students compete in esport at the collegiate level. With outstanding support, facilities, and coaching, these programs provide scholarships and support to help you develop as a gamer.

As a college esports gamer, you become part of an esports team and receive the essential support to improve your skills. With the aid of esports scholarships, you receive financial support. This helps you cover some or all the college expenses, including those related to your gaming.

Unlike other college sports, college esports scholarships are specific to individual games. Today, there are colleges with esports in their college sports programs. For instance, you will find Rocket League scholarships, Valorant scholarships, and League of Legends scholarships.

What Does an Esport Scholarship Cover?

An esports scholarship is a financial grant awarded by the coach and school as part of the recruiting process for the college team. It can be either a full scholarship (full ride) or partial, which means it covers some of the costs. Depending on the coverage, college esports scholarships can cover more than just tuition, room, and board—they can also include the costs of your gaming gear, tournament entry fees and travel to competitions.

FAQ: About College Esports and Gaming Scholarships

Esports is not officially recognized as an NCAA sport. However, many colleges and universities have established their own esports programs and leagues. These programs often offer esports scholarships and provide resources for players on their college teams.

College esports programs feature a variety of games, and scholarships are tied to specific games. Some popular games for which you can receive an esports scholarship include League of Legends, Valorant, Rocket League, Call of Duty, and Counterstrike. Other commonly played games include Super Smash Bros., Hearthstone, and FIFA.

Start recording your matches, as the coaches will ask for a highlight video. To further increase your chances of getting discovered, attend tennis showcases with invited US tennis coaches. These scouting events give you the opportunity to show your skills and talent on the court, talk to coaches in person, and establish connections.

Coaches look for student-athletes who can balance sports and academics, which means you need to maintain your academic record. Keep your grades high and perform well on standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT. If you’re not from an English-speaking country, you may need to take a language test such as TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test.

Over 200 colleges and universities in the US offer scholarships for esport. With the growing popularity of esports, more schools are launching esports programs and building competitive esport teams.

Does competing in esports in the US while studying at college sound exciting? Don’t miss the chance to turn your gaming into a real opportunity by securing a scholarship!
