What is College Golf?
College golf refers to playing golf at the collegiate level while being enrolled in a degree program. When you’re part of a college athletics program while studying, you are called a ‘student-athlete.’ Each college sport offers its own athletic scholarships. This means that if you’re a golfer, your skills can earn you a golf scholarship in the USA!Â
College golf is one of the biggest college sports in the US. Of this reason, you will find a large range of universities with golf scholarships available across the US. These colleges offer outstanding support from college golf coaches and staff to make sure you improve your skills and level.Â
Besides the daily practice and support from coaches to help you develop as a player, playing college golf as a college student-athlete may give you the opportunity to compete at a higher level than you would at home. In other words, tournaments as a college golfer proides an excellent experience, invaluable for your future golf career.Â
What Does a Golf Scholarship Cover?
Golf scholarships can help you cover some or even all of the expenses associated with studying and playing golf in college. This includes not only the costs related to your academic studies but also expenses for golf practice and tournaments. As a golfer, you’re already familiar with the costs of your sport—you need golf clubs, equipment but also other expenses such as tournament fees, practice fees and travel costs. Â
But what are some of the costs you can expect while studying in the U.S. as an international student? Cost of Attendance (COA) is the total estimated cost of attending a college for one academic year. This includes tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies, and personal expenses. The COA varies depending on factors like the type of institution (public or private) and if the student is an in-state or out-of-state resident.Â
College golf scholarships can significantly reduce the cost of atttendance. They range from full ride scholarships (fully funded), which cover nearly all expenses, to partial scholarships that might only cover specific items like tuition or books. But remember, even a partial scholarship can make a large difference in managing the college expenses. In other words, golf scholarships in the USA help golfers from around the world finance a bachelor’s degree while improving their game!Â
Women’s Golf Scholarships
For women’s golf scholarships, there are 6 scholarships per team in Division I and 5.4 in Division II. These numbers represent if the program is fully funded. Coaches often strategically divide these scholarships into partial scholarships to attract and support a larger group of players. There are 720 college golf programs within the NCAA (Division I-III) and more than 140 in the NAIA. In other words, international female golf players have plenty of options when it comes to finding the perfect school!Â
Men’s Golf Scholarships
In men’s golf, there are 4.5 scholarships per team in Division I and 3.6 scholarships per team in Division II. These figures represent the maximum number of full scholarships available. Just like in women’s college golf, coaches often distribute the scholarship funds as partial awards to recruit more players for their team. As a male golf player, you also have a wide selection of college golf programs: there are 820 NCAA (Division I-III) programs and over 160 in the NAIA.Â

A Day in Life as a Student on a Golf Scholarship  
What does a typical day look like for a college golfer? Get ready for early mornings and learn how to master time management!Â
6 A.M.Â
Your day often starts with a workout session or a few hours of practice on the golf course before heading to school.Â
9 A.M. – 3 P.M.Â
After morning practice, you’ll be in class, attending lectures just like any other student. Between classes, you might find time for studying, group projects, or meetings with professors.Â
3 P.M.Â
It’s time to head back to the golf course for individual practice or team training with your coach.Â
6 P.M
Around 6 P.M., the rest of the evening is usually reserved for catching up on school assignments, dinners, activities with teammates and other students, and winding down to prepare for the next day.Â
Does it sound a bit hectic? The life of a student-athlete is indeed intense and packed with activities, especially during the in-season. However, many former student-athletes say that their years as college athletes were incredibly fun and rewarding, creating memories for a lifetime!Â

To play college golf for a school’s team, you need to be a skilled player. College golf programs and coaches aim to recruit players with strong junior performance and a low handicap (often around 4-(+4) for top programs). However, the level of competition varies across divisions. Division I schools are the most competitive and require the highest level of players, but there are also good opportunities for players who have yet reached the top international level but there may be good opportunities for players who have yet reached the top International level.Â
Depending on the division and school, it can be competitive to get a golf scholarship. Division I schools with high-performing teams can be more difficult to get recruited to. However, there are also opportunities in Division II, Division III, NAIA, and JUCO programs with available scholarships. To boost your chances of being awarded a golf scholarship in any division, it’s important to have strong academic and golf records, along with a good highlight video that showcases your skills, talent, and potential.
Start recording your matches, as the coaches will ask for a highlight video. To further increase your chances of getting discovered, attend tennis showcases with invited US tennis coaches. These scouting events give you the opportunity to show your skills and talent on the court, talk to coaches in person, and establish connections.Â
Coaches look for student-athletes who can balance sports and academics, which means you need to maintain your academic record. Keep your grades high and perform well on standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT. If you’re not from an English-speaking country, you may need to take a language test such as TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test.
