What is College Swimming?

College swimming is when you swim competitively for a college while working towards your degree. You’ll be part of a college swim team, use their training facilities, and compete against other schools. In addition to the support of available college swimming scholarships, college swimming gives you access to professionals and swimming coaches, ready to assist you both during and after your studies.

This blend of sports and academics is a special feature of the U.S. college system, offering a unique chance for athletes to pursue both athletic and educational goals – with the chance of receiving financial support to cover the costs!

What Does a College Swimming Scholarship Cover?

A swimming scholarship is a financial grant designed to help collegiate swimmers cover some or all of the costs associated with attending college. These costs, known as Cost of Attendance (COA), include tuition, housing, board, and other academic fees.

By receiving a swimming scholarship, you can significantly reduce your financial burden and focus on your studies and your sport. Because swimming scholarships do not only help covering the academic costs, but also the expenses related to your sport. This may include equipment, competitions and other costs.

Women's College Swimming Scholarships

Women’s college swimming is one of the most popular college sports in the U.S. There are over 600 college swimming programs across the NCAA, with more than 150 women’s swimming programs in the NAIA.

In the NCAA, scholarship offerings vary by division. Division I college swimming programs can offer up to 14 scholarships, while Division II programs can provide up to 8.1 scholarships for women’s college swimming teams. The NAIA, with its different regulations, allows for up to 8 scholarships per swim team. These figures represent the maximum number of full rides (fully funded scholarships), but coaches often allocate partial scholarships to support a larger number of swimmers on the team.

Men’s College Swimming Scholarships

There are more than 500 men’s college swimming programs in the NCAA and over 100 in the NAIA. While both the NCAA and NAIA govern collegiate sports, they operate as separate associations with distinct rules and regulations.

In the NCAA, scholarship offerings vary by division. Division I swimming programs can provide up to 9.9 scholarships, while Division II programs are capped at 8.1 scholarships for men’s college swimming teams. The NAIA, as a different governing body, allows for up to 8 scholarships per team. These numbers represent the maximum amount of full scholarships, but coaches often divide them into partial scholarships to extend financial support to a greater number of swimmers on the roster.
