What you Need to Know for the TOEFL Exam
Learn how to prepare for the TOEFL exam: test format, scoring and expert tips
If you are an international student who wants to study and play college sports in the United States, you will likely need to take the TOEFL exam. Most universities in the US offering sports scholarships will ask you to send your TOEFL scores. In this guide, we will explain what the TOEFL exam is, how it works, and how you can prepare for it.
What Is the TOEFL Exam?
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized exam that evaluates the English level of non-English speakers. Colleges and universities in the United States use it to check if international students can understand and use English in an academic setting. The test covers four key areas: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
TOEFL iBT is normally taken on a computer at a certified testing center. You can find testing centers in most major cities across 200 countries. But now you can also take it online from your home. The TOEFL iBT Home Edition maintains the same format, scoring, and validity as the in-person test, but allows you to take it from the comfort of your home. Nice, right? Just make sure you have a reliable internet connection, a computer that meets ETS requirements, and a room where you won’t be interrupted.
To ensure security and fairness, the TOEFL Home Edition is monitored by a live proctor. This means you’ll need to follow strict rules, like keeping your workspace clear, using only approved materials, and maintaining a stable internet connection. You’ll also need to verify your identity before starting the test.
Do I need TOELF to study in the USA?
In most cases, yes! Universities in the US usually require a TOEFL score as part of the admissions process for international students. Each university and athletic division have its own score requirements.
One thing to keep in mind—TOEFL scores aren’t required for your student visa, just for university admission. When applying for a visa, you’ll need things like your acceptance letter and proof of financial support instead.
How Difficult Is the TOEFL Exam?
The difficulty of the TOEFL exam really depends on your current level of English and how much you’re used to academic-style content. Even if you have a good level of English, this exam can be challenging if you’re unfamiliar with the test format. Therefore, everyone should prepare for it, regardless of their level.
Most students find the listening and speaking sections a bit tricky at first, especially if they’re not used to hearing or speaking English regularly. The reading and writing sections are more straightforward but still require practice with academic vocabulary and structure.
How Much Does the TOEFL Exam Cost?
The price of the TOEFL depends on where you take it, but in most countries, it falls between $190 and $250. This fee covers your test registration, score reports for up to four universities, and online access to your results.
Keep in mind that rescheduling or retaking the test comes with extra charges. If you need additional services—like extra score reports or faster result processing—those will also have an extra cost.
Before booking your test, check the official ETS website to confirm the exact price in your country. You might even find special discounts or promotions available!
What is the TOEFL Exam Format?
The TOEFL consists of four sections and takes around 2 hours (116 minutes) to complete.

How Does TOEFL Scores Work?
The TOEFL test scores range from 0 to 120 points. Each section is 30 points, so the total exam score is the sum of these four sections. The good news is that TOEFL isn’t a pass/fail test; instead, the higher your score, the better your English level is.
TOEFL scores are published online six days after your exam day. If your score is lower than required or expected, you can retake the test. The TOEFL exam can be taken as many times as you want, but no more than once every three days.
Universities in the US set specific TOELF score requirements for international students. Most universities ask for a minimum score of 70, but some—especially top academic institutions—may require scores of 100 or even higher. In some cases, there are also minimum scores for each section. For example, some schools may require a minimum of 20 in each section.

How Long Is the TOEFL Test Result Valid?
Your TOEFL score is valid for two years from the test date. After two years, it expires and can no longer be used for college applications.
Tip: Plan ahead! Make sure your TOEFL score will still be valid when you’re applying to universities or transferring. If in doubt, talk to our experts and we can help you figure it out.
