What is College Volleyball?

College volleyball is a sport offered at universities and colleges in the US and Canada. Volleyball programs make it possible for players to compete in both indoor and beach volleyball while pursuing a university degree.

College colleyball provides outstanding resources to players aiming to take their skills to the next level. In addition to financial aid from college volleyball scholarships, student-athletes receive daily practice and support from dedicated college coaches. It also includes access to top facilities at campus and experience of competing against other universities with your college team.

What Does a Volleyball Scholarship Cover?

A volleyball scholarship can make a big difference in covering your college expenses. It helps covering tuition, room and board, and even books and supplies. You might also get help with athletic fees, health insurance, and some other costs. The exact benefits depend on scholarship and school, but overall, it helps lower the total cost of attending college.

Men’s & Women’s Volleyball Scholarships

College volleyball is one of the most popular women’s college sports in the US. Although, there are universities  with men’s volleyball teams as well with available volleyball scholarships. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) are the largest governing bodies for college volleyball in the U.S. These organizations also oversee the number of college volleyball scholarships available per team. Keep in mind that scholarship funds are often divided into partial scholarships as it enables coaches to support more players on the team.

Women’s College Volleyball

Women’s college volleyball is a popular sport in the US. There are more than 1,000 college volleyball programs in the NCAA, and over 100 women’s volleyball programs in the NAIA. This offers a wide range of options for players in terms of divisions, levels, and locations.

In NCAA, the number of women’s volleyball scholarships varies by division. Division I volleyball teams can offer up to 12 scholarships, while Division II teams have up to 8. The NAIA, on the other hand, allows for 6 scholarships per team.

Men’s College Volleyball

Men’s college volleyball is growing in popularity. There are numerous college volleyball programs in the NCAA and NAIA, though not as many as for women’s volleyball. The NCAA features about 300 men’s volleyball programs, while the NAIA has around 30.

In the NCAA, Division I men’s volleyball teams can offer up to 4.5 scholarships, and Division II teams also have up to 4.5 scholarships. The NAIA allows for up to 6 scholarships per team.

A Day in Life as a Student on a Volleyball Scholarship

The chance to combine high-level sports with higher education is a strong advantage of the American college system. This perfect blend of sport and academics offers an opportunity for athletes, which is rarely found elsewhere in the world. As a result, it can be hard for international players to imagine what daily life as a volleyball student-athlete might be like. This is what a typical day might look like for a student playing college volleyball:

7:00 AM
After breakfast, it’s time to head to the gym for your morning volleyball practice. These sessions are usually scheduled early to ensure that everyone on the team can participate without any schedule clashes.

9:00 AM – 3PM
After practice, you will attend your scheduled classes at campus. Throughout the day, you will have a mix of lectures, discussions, and group projects – just like any other college student.  After the morning classes, you’ll grab lunch, often with your teammates, in the campus dining hall. This is a great time to catch up with friends and discuss the morning’s practice. After the lunch break, you attend the afternoon classes.

3:00 PM – 6PM
Return to the gym or training facility for another practice session after school. This could involve team practice, meetings with the team, strength training, or conditioning exercises. After practice, you might have some additional recovery activities such as stretching or ice baths to help your body recover.

6:00 PM – 10PM
Enjoy a nutritious dinner after the day’s last practice to refuel and unwind after a busy day. Thereaftter, dedicate some time to studying, working on assignments, or preparing for upcoming exams. Once the school work is done, don’t forget to relax a bit and spending time with friends. Get to bed at a reasonable hour to make sure you’re well-rested for the next day!

When tournaments or away games are on the agenda, your routine shifts to make room for the extra activities. Away games might take you to another city or even a different state, meaning early departures and long travel days. You’ll be on the road with your team, playing multiple matches over the weekend. It’s a busy time that requires balancing your study schedule with performing at your best as a volleyball player. Managing travel, competitions, and schoolwork is key to staying at the top of your game as a student-athlete!

FAQ: About College Volleyball and Volleyball Scholarships

College volleyball scholarships are typically awarded to student-athletes based on their skills, talent, performance and potential. The scholarships for volleyball can either be full rides or partial. This financial grant helps covering costs such as tuition, fees, room and board, and sometimes other expenses. Coaches from NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA schools can offer these scholarships to players as part of the recruiting process.

Many U.S. colleges and universities offer volleyball scholarships, especially those with competitive programs. With over 1,000 women’s college volleyball programs in the NCAA and over 100 in the NAIA, players have plenty of options.
